Prime TV Picks: Seven Must-Watch Films This Week

Top Selection

This Satirical Thriller

Coralie Fargeat's unflinching satire addresses the demanding standards for female beauty as well as the feared consequences of growing older. Hollywood star Demi Moore delivers a brilliant performance playing Elisabeth, an aging celebrity demoted to presenting a workout series on TV. Forced aside by her deceitful superior Harvey, she seeks out a secretive and horrifying treatment titled the Substance. This generates a new version of herself called Sue, resulting in a steadily more parasitic dynamic between the two. Friday 17 October, Paramount Plus

This Mystery Thriller

This Agatha Christie-esque mystery stars Knightley playing Laura, an ace reporter who opts for a hiatus from writing about world issues to board a high-end voyage alongside a gravely sick Norwegian shipping heiress and donor, her spouse, as well as other affluent guests. But after a mysterious woman goes overboard overnight and all passengers insists she wasn't real, her journalistic curiosity kick in. Available now, the Netflix platform

Presence Film

Soderbergh pushes his directorial skills with this innovative ghostly tale captured wholly from the viewpoint of a ghost. After a clan featuring mother Rebekah plus Callina Liang as Chloe moves into their fresh home, the lens – as the unseen entity – shadows their actions. The teen shows signs of conscious of the supernatural presence, and the entity appears guarding her. Yet what is the reason? This is an entertaining concept that avoids overstaying, with a twist that may be unexpected. This Saturday, 4.35pm, 10.10pm, the Sky channel

Nicolas Cage's Meta Comedy

The iconic actor fully commits to his cult stardom via this autobiographical spoof. He plays a self-obsessed celebrity named Nicolas Cage who accepts a $1m payday to visit a celebration on the Spanish island for the rich Javi, played by Pedro Pascal. Recruited by government spies to spy on the suspected cartel boss, the actor's “nouveau shamanic acting ability” proves useful. Saturday 11 October, 9pm, the Channel 4 network

This Creepy Thriller

The director's contained scarefest holds up well without requiring a continuation. Taking place in 1970s Colorado, several kidnappings has made the children frightened. When Finney gets captured by “the Grabber” and imprisoned in a basement, he dreads a fatal end. However, the non-functional line in the room repeatedly calls, with ghostly voices offering help, while the prophetic visions from his sibling Gwen might rescue him. A solid creepfest. This Saturday, late evening, on Film4

The Tammy Faye Biopic

In the struggle between spirituality and money, the victory is clear for Mammon in this director's brilliantly over-the-top film adaptation regarding the shamed TV preacher plus her lawbreaking partner. The actor portrays the venal Jim, who states early on, asserting religious justification for riches. He and Tammy Faye set about profiting from the American public's Christian beliefs. It's an extravaganza of poor styling, bad makeup and insincerity, though the lead actress succeeds to present the character as a sympathetic figure. October 14th, late night, the Film4 channel

Black Bag

This period's another release from Steven Soderbergh is a spy mystery as precise as the polo necks used by Fassbender's British agent. He receives a mission to discover a double agent among the team from five suspects – one of whom is his own wife. Both actors are experts of understated style, leading to a delightful mind game of truth or lie develops. Tom Burke, Regé-Jean Page, Naomie Harris and Marisa Abela join in the smart espionage amusement. Friday 17 October, 8.05am, 12.55pm, 8pm, the Sky channel
