Patients Discontinuing Anti-Obesity Jabs Gain Back Pounds at a Quadrupled Rate Than Dieters

Weight management involves long-term strategies.

New research indicates that people who stop using blockbuster weight-loss injections like semaglutide or tirzepatide can put back on reduced body mass at a significantly accelerated pace than those who halt conventional lifestyle programs.

Research printed in a leading health publication demonstrates that while obese people often shed substantial amounts of their total mass while on the medication, the mass is regained at an average rate of 0.8 kg per month upon discontinuation.

"Individuals using such drugs need to be aware of the potential of fast weight regain when the treatment concludes," cautioned researcher Dr. Susan Jebb.

Such speed of regain implies a reversion to starting mass in about 18 months.

Comparing Treatments

The analysis, which looked at dozens of trials involving thousands of participants, compared the results of these new drugs with conventional dieting.

Researchers point out that people who shed pounds through lifestyle changes alone usually experience a less rapid weight regain—perhaps 100 grams monthly—after stopping.

The Reason for the Quick Regain

Doctors believe the way of the drugs accounts for the amplified regain.

GLP-1 drugs mimic a body's own chemical called GLP-1, which moderates hunger.

"Sustained high doses of the hormone levels several times higher than the body's typical production could lead to the body to generate a reduced amount of its endogenous GLP-1, and may also lessen responsiveness to its actions," explained Dr. Adam Collins, a nutrition specialist.

"Withdrawal of this medication results in appetite is unsuppressed, making binge eating much more probable."

A Chronic Issue?

Health authorities advise the injections for individuals with weight-linked medical conditions, alongside recommended diet and exercise modifications.

Many experts say that, due to the likelihood of relapse, the treatment should be considered life-long.

This view is echoed by drug manufacturers, who note that the results "underscore the persistent nature of obesity," comparing it to managing diseases like diabetes.

Patient Testimonies

Users who have stopped the jabs report a sudden return of appetite.

"It felt as if a switch activating and I was suddenly extremely hungry," said one woman.

The struggle is compounded if individuals have not established sustainable dietary or behavioural modifications during therapy.

Growing Use

Figures suggest that a significant number of people in the UK have used weight-loss jabs in the last 12 months, with demand remaining high.

  • Adoption is greater among females compared to males.
  • The 40s and 50s age group shows the greatest usage rates.
  • A large proportion obtain the medications through private prescriptions rather than the NHS.

Ultimately, experts stress that while these medications are potent tools for shedding pounds, they are not a magic solution and maintained weight loss likely depends on integrated lifestyle support.
